The Command Line Interface (CLI) allows users to utilize a PC using only text commands from a keyboard, rather than a mouse to interact with a GUI. CLI was practically the only way to use a PC prior to the availability of the GUI. The CLI is available from the terminal program and can be used without a GUI, where it takes up the entire screen, or it can be used within a GUI, where it resides within a window.

Many people are afraid of using the terminal, or believe that it is antiquated and has been superseded by the GUI. But no one should be afraid of the terminal. It is easy to use once one has become acquainted with some basic commands. And rather than being a relic of times past, CLI continues to be more powerful and efficient than the GUI at many tasks. Both CLI and GUI have their pros and cons. The most powerful and efficient way of using a PC is a combination of both.

Check out some useful and common CLI Commands.
